At the Heart of the Philippines' Tuna Capital
General Santos City has become synonymous with tuna, earning the moniker "Tuna Capital of the Philippines."
At the heart of the country's "Tuna Capital" stands the General Santos Fish Port Complex, where significant quantities of tuna arrive daily in the bustling fishing trade center.
Completed in 1999, the 32-hectare complex is the second largest fish port in the country, next to the Navotas Fish Port Complex in Metro Manila. This busy fish port serves as the center of SOCCSKSARGEN's fishing industry.
A variety of tuna arrives at the complex in large quantities, starting early in the morning for quality checks before being sold to buyers. The delivered tuna is sold for both local consumption and exported to countries such as Japan, the US, and European Union nations. Six of the seven canning companies located in General Santos also source their tuna from the fish port.
The popularity of this fish has enticed tourists to visit the complex to witness and experience the fishing trade in the area. The fish port’s prominence continues to draw stakeholders to the coastal city, making it a unique stop in the region.
Visitors are welcome to visit the fish port as it remains open to the public, but guests are required to follow certain protocols for everyone’s safety.
The visit to the General Santos City Fish Port is part of the Department of Tourism’s Philippine Experience Program in SOCCSKSARGEN.
