Train to 'nowhere'?

The MRT-3 continues to be plagued by service interruptions, even after the government terminated the train's maintenance contractor Busan Universal Rail Inc.'s (BURI) allegedly due to poor performance.

After the Department of Transportation (DOTr) took over from BURI, two mishaps occurred within days. On November 14,  a passenger fell from the platform, her arm severed by the following coach. Two days later, a running train's coupling detached, leaving one of its coaches behind along the tracks.

With reduced operating hours and no quick-fixes on the horizon, long lines and jam-packed coaches continue to be the norm. "Safe pa ba sumakay sa MRT?" asked Sen. Grace Poe recently. Yes, replied the DOTr.

Safe or not, these photos depict the everyday struggle of thousands of MRT-3 commuters on a train that could soon be going 'nowhere.'
